FACILITATED STRATEGIC PLANNING TO ENVISION EMERGING MARKET LANDSCAPE OF FOOD AND MEDICINE

Business Challenge
An emerging U.S. science based company with innovative technology and private equity fund investors sought to envision the emerging market space between food and medicine. The client sought to establish a strategic direction and roadmap in order to: a) gain Board support for its strategy; b) to define its market position and prioritize end user markets for focused strategic alliance development and c) to define a specific action plan to generate near term revenues and cash flow. The immediate challenge was to gain credibility with a Board that itself was in disagreement over the direction and focus of the company and the value of the technology. Another challenge was to enable the executive group (of which 2 of the 5 key executives were on board for only a week) to be a functional, respectful team able to efficiently work through multiple challenges and opinions in a timely manner and come to good decisions the group could jointly own, communicate in harmony and execute immediately.

How We Helped
We designed and facilitated a rapid, interactive strategic planning process with the top management (CEO, CFO, CSO, CMO and Head of Strategic Alliances - plus 1 Board Member). We synchronized the skill sets of the team and created a productive environment to review the ambitions and vision for the company and the big potential of the commercial opportunity. We facilitated the team to understand and align around the key strategic questions and operating challenges and to outline a strategic roadmap with specific action items and accountabilities. We guided the team to clarify their business focus and their go to market plan in terms of end user sectors, target sub-markets, priority channel partners and ultimate customers – all in order to bring a focus and specificity to the business. We facilitated the CSO to refine technology development and product pipeline plans to map to the market and sales aspirations. And we enabled the new CFO to rapidly understand the potential and challenges of the business and to translate the strategic roadmap into an operating budget for the next 12 months.

Benefits Delivered
We guided the team, which was in disarray and confused by the Board, to be aligned together around the potential future state of the emerging marketplace. We guided the team to align on the total integrated strategic marketing, technology, commercialization and financing plan and to translate the strategic roadmap into presentations to update the Strategic Planning Committee and the Board of Directors. The Board approved the direction and budget.
